HOW TO MAKE A POOR-MAN'S FOOD PLOT

I’ve been making poor-man’s food plots since 1995. They are made from small natural openings or semi-openings in cover or on the edge of the woods. The goal is to turn these hidden spots into productive staging-area food plots using only hand tools and no large equipment. I’ve tried several methods for making these plots and have reached several conclusions about what works best.

■ Three years ago, my friend Kolton Atchley and I began traveling to Easton, Illinois, to hunt with our buddy Gavin Urish. The first two years, we used a week of vacation to hunt. But at the end of the 2019 deer season, we decided it was time to put some work into the farm. Naturally, the first item was to determine how we could plant food plots and provide deer with more groceries. Gavin had all the equipment we would need for planting. We just had to get there in August to complete our work.

At first glance, young pine plantations don’t seem to offer much to a deer hunter because they’re thick, hard to travel through and usually don’t offer deer much in the way of food. These same characteristics, though, can actually make them prime locations for hunting plots if you know what to look for and how to set them up for the best possible results. Imperial No-Plow was the key to attracting this Tennessee buck. My 2020 No-Plow success story started in 2019, when I planted Whitetail Institute’s Secret Spot in an area of woods where deer were traveling between bedding and feeding areas. I wanted to hunt the spot in a ground blind with my 8-year-old grandson in hopes of him taking a deer with my crossbow. We were blessed that season, as he shot a great 11-point buck in that food plot the opening day of Tennessee’s 2019 archery season.

The right food plots in the right places can transform a big woods property from mediocrity to a deer hunting paradise.

Quality deer hunting has different meanings to different hunters. Some believe putting a big-antlered buck on the ground defines quality, but others are mainly turned on by tasty venison, and antlers are way down the priority list. Many hunters are more concerned with aesthetics or elements of the hunt that value particular settings, equipment or techniques rather than success.

Planting a food plot is as simple as turning some dirt and throwing down some seed, right? With some time and rainfall, you’ll have a field of clover, oats or a blend of deer candy in no time.

It’s not quite that simple, of course. In fact, turning a patch of ground into a lush, vibrant field of clover or brassicas can be a challenge. Don’t fret. I asked four of Whitetail Institute’s experienced product users to share their top tip for building a plot that deer — and you — will love.

Without question, one of the Whitetail Institute’s most successful products is Imperial Whitetail No-Plow. In fact, No-Plow is the second longest-running food plot product in the Whitetail Institute’s forage product line, right behind Imperial Whitetail Clover. It owes its huge popularity to two things: its superior attractiveness to deer and versatility.

This was the first year we planted No-Plow on our new property. There were three other bucks in the field when I harvested this one with my bow. He was killed on Nov. 20 and scored 132-3/8. He is an awesome Alabama whitetail. We also killed another 120-inch buck in another No-Plow plot in October. We have used No-Plow for the past 12 years on a different property and we will continue to do this as long as we keep seeing bucks like we have in the past. We’ve killed 25 bucks off No-Plow since we started using it.

Food plots are a long road, and at times difficult, but it’s also a road you can’t get off. My first food plot was about 15 feet wide and about 50 feet long, made with a chain saw and tiller. It was my first try and I used Whitetail Institute’s Imperial Whitetail Clover.

Robert Curtis is a trend setter. The Pennsylvania hunter started using Whitetail Institute products about 15 years ago. And now, a decade and half later, he has a solid deer management program that includes highly nutritious food plots. “I got hold of some of the No-Plow first,” Curtis recalled.

I’ll never forget the day in 2006 I had to watch a trophy- class deer walk down a cornfield edge, past my stand at 10 yards and into the timber — never to be seen again. Let’s face it — most of us are very busy. In most cases, growing a successful food plot requires lots of time and energy. Time and energy are two things many of us are lacking. Before we know it, fall is almost here and our plans to plant a food plot have gotten away from us. There are two things you can do. Bury your head in the sand and put off putting in a good plot until next year or roll up your sleeves and knock one out quickly before opening day arrives.
